EXERCISE 2
California Legislation and Codes
This exercise is designed to explore
1. Bart Simpson has found himself in a sticky situation. It seems that Bart was recently at a party when the guacamole ran out. Being a take-charge kind of guy, Bart grabbed his skateboard and skated over to a nearby avocado ranch to bring back a few avocados and ensure the life of the party. Unfortunately, as he was climbing back over the fence, he was apprehended by Chief Wiggum and charged with grand theft. Bart cannot believe that stealing a few avocados could really constitute grand theft. Can you help him locate a
2. While Bart is out on bail, he and his friend, Milhouse, decide to go skateboarding. Bart is appalled when Milhouse shows up wearing a gigantic helmet. Milhouse tries to tell Bart that it is the “law” that they wear a helmet while skateboarding but Bart doesn’t believe him. They have skateboarded over to your library (Milhouse with his helmet; Bart without) to see what the California Codes have to say on this matter. Can you help?
3. While he is at the library, Bart decides that he should also look into the “three strikes” law. He has a personal interest in this law since in addition to the avocado rustling incident he has had two other unfortunate brushes with the law. Can you help Bart determine exactly what the three strikes law says and whether he should be nervous about his upcoming trial?
4. Principal Seymour Skinner is interested in reviewing the Teacher Support and Development Act of 2003 bill currently in the California Legislature. Can you help him find the text? What is the status of this bill?
